This SPECIAL VERSION of GrowthClimate® BASICS is prepared for those who have experienced or have witnessed ABUSE.  The primary focus will be on the NATURE of abuse, WHY it occurs, its IMPACT on the other parent and the children, and what to DO about it.  If you are someone with HIGH awareness on this subject, you may well ask, “What KIND of abuse?”  Most people conclude that it is PHYSICAL abuse, the kind normally connected with DOMESTIC VIOLENCE.   You may be surprised to learn how many victims are unaware that they are victims. The reason for this is that abusers are very skilled at shifting the blame for their abusive behavior directly onto their victims.  [This latter tactic is part of the weaponry used in psychological abuse.]

Other than the VICTIMS of domestic violence, few people recognize how many OTHER kinds of abuse typically go with DOMESTIC VIOLENCE: Psychological, Emotional, Verbal, Economic, Sexual, and even Spiritual Abuse.  Stalking also comes under this category.  Even harder to comprehend, where a mother is being sexually abused, the children are often being subjected to sexual abuse as well! 

WHERE IS ABUSE FOUND?

Abuse can be found in ANY kind of relationship.  Children, adolescents, and adults—including the elderly—are all susceptible.  Know this, that it is not limited just to families.  It occurs in:

1.  Dating relationships.
2.  Intimate relationships of the unmarried.
3.  Interaction between divorcing and divorced couples.
4.  Child and adolescent relationships.
5.  Interaction with the elderly by their children and/or caregivers.
6.  Teacher/student relationships.
7.  School classrooms, lunchrooms & playgrounds.
8.  Neighborhoods, and in
9.  Agencies & Institutions [public & private] which are set up to assist,
     rather than harm, the families and individuals they serve. 

Is abuse occurring more today?  Is it just being reported more? Or has public awareness increased?  The answer is yes to all three questions. 

And KNOWING about abuse is not enough!  STOPPING ABUSE, particularly the INTERGENERATION TRANSFER of the abusive behavior, correcting the susceptibility in some victims to continue as victims, and DEALING WITH THE FALLOUT FROM ABUSE are among our greatest challenges!

17.  Understanding depression and anxiety and how to back out of it.
18.  You can have hope for your children to heal.
